Fun Facts about Trees
As the poet said, “I think I shall never see a poem as lovely as a tree…” Trees provide beauty, a sense of security, and a place for animals to live. They help purify the air and add oxygen to it while removing carbon from the environment. The environmental benefits of trees are well-known, but there are other reasons that trees are amazing. Firstly, trees never die of old age! They usually die because of bugs or men cutting them down. They may also be consumed in fires and suffer from rot. Urban trees have a lifespan of about 8 years.
Trees can help you save money. When placed correctly around your building, they reduce air conditioning costs and energy usage. Trees and shrubs that are well-cared for can increase your property value, and some mature trees can worth as much as $10,000. Mature trees also remove more pollution from the air than newly planted trees.
Trees grow from the top. A branch that starts near the bottom will only move up a couple of inches over the course of the life of a tree. Arbor Day was first celebrated in Nebraska in the 1800s. Nebraska has one of the largest forests in the nation, and the U.S. is about 1/3 forested land. The superstition of knocking on wood comes from a time when people believed spirits lived in trees. Knocking summoned the protective spirit. The largest tree in the world is found in California’s Redwood National Park. There are also several trees in the area that your vehicle can drive through!
